SPARTA, Ky. - Our three-week first Smiles in the Sand photo contest came to a touching conclusion when winner Carl C.'s photo garnered nearly 370 likes on the Kentucky Speedway Facebook page during the final round of voting.

His likeness will be featured on the sand sculpture that will be displayed on our concourse throughout our Sept. 25-26 race weekend along with last season's race winner, Brendan Gaughan, the 300 logo and beach-themed icons.

Carl's friend, Rhonda S., submitted the photo for the contest's Round 3 photo gallery. The picture earned the most likes during a 24-hour voting period.

Rhonda shared the following Facebook comment after learning her friend was the grand prize winner:

"That's awesome, thanks to everyone who voted for my picture. The man in the pictures name is Carl. He was recently diagnosed with 4th stage lung, neck and throat cancer. He just called, so excited that his picture had won! Please remember him and his family when you pray! We can't wait to see his picture in the sand!"

Facebook friends received additional thanks from Carl's daughter, Lakesha:

"I just want to say thanks to everyone who took the time to like my dad's picture. He is so excited about having his picture in the sand! Please continue to keep him and our family in your prayers!!!"

Make a stop at our sand sculpture part of your race weekend.
