Kentucky Speedway will introduce open-wheel fans to the new Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, with a 100-mile race beginning at 11:30 a.m. The race will set the stage for the "Belterra Casino Indy 300" later that day at 1:30 p.m.

"We enjoy our partnership with Tony (George) and the entire Indy Racing staff. We're delighted Kentucky Speedway has been selected to be part of the inaugural Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series schedule," Kentucky Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager Mark F. Cassis said. "This also is a win for our fans, who will now receive two exciting Indy Racing events for one price on 'Open Wheel Sunday.'"

The new series is designed to develop young drivers and was created on the same founding principles as the Indy Racing League. Infiniti Q45 engines will power new Dallara Automobili chassis built for the series. All machines will use Firestone Firehawk tires exclusively. Infiniti Pro Series V8 engines will produce approximately 450 horsepower for the single-seat winged chassis, providing an ideal training ground for the 650-horsepower, single-seat winged cars of the Indy Racing League.

"The launch of this new series is the natural evolution of the Indy Racing League," Indy Racing League President and CEO Tony George said. "It was a goal of the Indy Racing League to debut the Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series with a sound business model in place. With our partners at Dallara and Infiniti, this will be a successful series that will add value to promoters when they host an Indy Racing League weekend."

Many existing Indy Racing teams are expected to field an entry in the Infiniti Pro Series, including 2000 Indy Racing League champion Hemelgarn Racing and Sinden Racing Service. Numerous new teams are also expected to compete in the series.

The series kicks off its anticipated seven-race schedule at Kansas Speedway on July 7, 2002. All Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series events will run on the same weekend and track as scheduled Indy Racing League events. Additional series dates will be announced later.
