The NASCAR Hills Bros. All Pro Series opened the action for Kentucky Speedway's fourth and final race weekend of the 2002 season with a two-hour practice session on Friday, August 9.

Scott Carlson owned the fastest lap of the session at 155.563 mph (34.713 seconds) in his No. 57 Advance Construction Services Chevrolet. His lap speed was just hundredths off of Eddie Mercer's June pole speed of 155.588 mph (34.707 seconds) at Kentucky Speedway.

"We were the first ones out, so we managed to stay on top the board all two hours of practice," Carlson said. "We'll see how qualifying goes, if we qualify somewhere in the top five it will make us happy. Hopefully we can win this thing. The track is great, this is my favorite place to come. Beautiful weather, fastest in practice, we can't ask for anything more than a good qualifying run."

Also at the front of the 39-car pack were Stanley Smith (No. 49 Express Oil Change/Smith Drywall Chevrolet), third in the June series race at Kentucky, owned the second fastest lap of the session at 155.383 mph (34.753 seconds) and series points leader Charlie Bradberry (No. 78 Bradberry Racing Chevrolet), fourth at Kentucky in June, was third the third fastest of the session with a best lap of 155.079 mph (34.821 seconds).

Mercer was forced to withdraw when the engine of his No. 27 Everwood/Phoenix/Fla. Auto Auction Chevrolet gave way after an accident during the session.
