SPARTA, Ky. - Roush Fenway Racing driver Chris Buescher led opening practice for Saturday's 300 with a lap of 174.701 mph Friday.

The rookie ran 24 laps in the No. 60 Ford and was followed on the speed chart by Richard Childress Racing (RCR) drivers Brian Scott, Brendan Gaughan and Ty Dillon.

Sam Hornish Jr., who is making his first Nationwide Series start since Mid-Ohio, was fifth fastest in the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Nationwide Series points leader Chase Elliott was eighth in the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet and teammate Regan Smith was 12th.

The fourth RCR entry, the No. 33 Chevrolet driven by Cale Conley, completed the most laps (51) during the session. Conley had the second best 10-lap average behind Trevor Bayne (170.478 mph).

The final one-hour practice for Nationwide teams is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Buescher ranks seventh in the Nationwide points standings and won the series' race at Mid-Ohio earlier this season. He started and finished 18th in June at Kentucky Speedway.

The 300 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
