Kentucky Speedway Mourns Dan Wheldon's Passing
Sam Schmidt Motorsports IZOD IndyCar Series driver Dan Wheldon, 33, passed away today after sustaining injuries when his No. 77 Dallara/Honda/Firestone was involved in a multiple-car crash during a 300-mile race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Wheldon won his second career Indianapolis 500 in May and was competing in the series for the third time this season in today's race.
He made his ninth career Kentucky Speedway start on Oct. 2 and placed 14th. He collected five top-five finishes, including third-place showings in 2010, 2005 and 2004, and a total of six top-10 finishes in his Kentucky Speedway appearances.
"We share the sorrow of the IZOD IndyCar Series and motorsports community on the passing of Dan Wheldon. He was a great friend to Kentucky Speedway and recently promoted our October race by taking a young fan on a Macy's shopping spree. Dan was truly a champion as a person as well as a competitor," Kentucky Speedway General Manager Mark Simendinger said.
