Kimmel Leads Friday'S ARCA Practice At Kentucky Speedway
Frank Kimmel, winner of both ARCA RE-Max Series races at Kentucky Speedway in 2001, posted the fastest laps during practice at the 1.5 mile tri-oval on Friday morning in advance of Saturday's Channel 5 155.
Kimmel turned a lap at 166.328 mph in his No. 46 Advance Auto Parts/Pork the Other White Meat Ford, bested the second-fastest car by more that two miles per hour.
"(The track) is so smooth," said Kimmel of the Kentucky Speedway track that was resurfaced in April. "There are a couple of different transitions than last year. Last year, it had a definite character. This year, it is so smooth that it is a little bit different."
Chad Blount, who stands third in points, turned the second fastest lap at 164.089 in the No. 77 Braun Auto Group Dodge. Blount's best lap was turned in 32.909 seconds, nearly seven-tenths of a second slower than the laps he turned in testing on April 23.
"It is kind of frustrating," Blount said. "We were a little bit loose to start. We went one way through practice, and now we are going back the other way for qualifying. We are going back to (the setup) we had when we tested here."
Series points leader Damon Lusk (No. 22 Dynatek-One Race America Chevrolet) brought out the first caution of the practice when he went in to the wall heading into Turn One.
"It just came around on me," Lusk said. "I might have gotten into it a little too hard. I just don't know what happened."
Qualifying for the Channel 5 155 will begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Kentucky Speedway opens its 2002 season this evening at 8:00 p.m., with "The Auto Body Panels Short Track Special" which will showcase USAC National Midget Car Series, ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series and Baby Grand Series racing on the speedway's paved quarter-mile track.
Race action continues Saturday, May 11, at 8:00 p.m., when the ARCA RE/MAX Series takes the green flag for the inaugural "Channel 5-155." Gates open at 3:00 p.m., and the evening will feature a concert by country singer Chely Wright. Tickets are still available for both days of family fun and entertainment.
