Speedway Gm Cassis Comments On Nextel Cup Series Schedule Changes
The 2005 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup schedule was announced today with additional dates on the circuit at Texas Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway. North Carolina Speedway, "The Rock," in Rockingham, N.C., which hosted two races last season and one this season, will not host a series race next season for the first time since 1965. Darlington Raceway will transition its lone date from November to May next season.
Kentucky Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager Mark F. Cassis commented on the schedule realignment and Kentucky Speedway's efforts toward attracting a future NEXTEL Cup Series date.
"Sure, at first you can't help but get a little discouraged. I feel bad for our fans and sponsors as well as our team who work this project day in and day out," Cassis said. "However, you have to step back and look at the larger picture: This sport (Nextel Cup) is on the move. The migration out of the southeast to larger, more modern venues to support corporate sponsors and moves to larger, strategic television markets is simply how you grow the sport. When you combine our facility and marketplace with the proven support we receive from sponsors and fans, I'm 100 percent confident Kentucky Speedway will prevail. Our team will stay focused and do everything it can to be on the NEXTEL Cup schedule in 2006."
