Taylor Wins Indy Racing League Infiniti Pro Series Pole At Kentucky Speedway
Indy Racing League Infiniti Pro Series points leader Mark Taylor took the pole position for "The Kentucky 100" at Kentucky Speedway by turning the fastest qualifying lap of 183.774 mph.
"Great job by the guys," Taylor said of his team's front-row performance. "Obviously, the conditions were just right for our car. It's going to be a completely different race. Everyone will be able to overtake, I think, and it's going to be down to the last lap."
Taylor earns his third pole of the season and will lead the 13-car field to the green flag at 12:45 p.m. tomorrow. The 25-year-old from Tonbridge, England enters "The Kentucky 100" with a 91-point advantage over the second-place Jeff Simmons in the series points race. Taylor will attempt to guide his No. 4 Fulmar Racing Panther Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone to its sixth win of the season.
Jeff Simmons (No. 20 Western Union Speed Team Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone) will start second after turning a 183.338 mph lap while Brandon Erwin (Raymond James & Associates/SSM Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone) will start third after posting a 183.252 mph effort. Tom Wood (No. 9 Trailblazer Drilling/Savanna Energy Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone) rounds out the second row. He qualifies fourth with a lap of 182.944 mph.
The IRL Infiniti Pro Series is in its second year as the primary developmental league for the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series. The IRL Infiniti Pro Series will race 12 100-mile events in conjunction with IRL IndyCar Series races this season. "The Kentucky 100" is the ninth race of 2003.
Medeiros Leads Practice Session: Geona Racing driver Thiago Medeiros led the afternoon practice session with a fastest lap of 183.417 mph. Medeiros enters tomorrow's "Kentucky 100" fourth in the series standings. Medeiros owns one pole award, four top-five and six top-10 finishes this season.
Kentucky Speedway's final weekend of the 2003 season features the IRL Infiniti Pro Series and IRL IndyCar Series. The weekend begins on Saturday, August 16 with IRL IndyCar Series qualifying and the Infiniti Pro Series "Kentucky 100" race on "The Bull Country Radio Pole Day." The IndyCar Series takes to the track on August 17 at 2:00 p.m. for "The Belterra Casino Indy 300." Cincinnati resident Don Mueller of the reality television show "Who Wants To Marry My Dad?" will serve as the event grand marshal and sign autographs at the speedway at 10:30 a.m. Pop music entertainers Sixpence None The Richer will perform a pre-race concert beginning at 11:30 a.m. Gates open both days at 9:00 a.m.
