TUBBY SMITH TO BE GRAND MARSHAL AT KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY "BELTERRA CASINO INDY 300"
Popular University of Kentucky Head Basketball Coach Tubby Smith has agreed to be Grand Marshal for the "Belterra Casino Indy 300" Indy Racing on Aug. 12 at Kentucky Speedway.
Smith will participate in the pre-race Fans Brunch in the infield, meet & greet the drivers and fans and deliver the most famous words in auto racing: "Drivers, start your engines."
"When you think of Kentucky, you think of racing and basketball. Tubby and Kentucky Speedway go together naturally, " said Kentucky Speedway Chairman and Co-Owner Jerry Carroll. " We are real proud of Kentucky basketball, the state of Kentucky and pleased Tubby has agreed to be part of our day."
Smith coached the Wildcats to one NCAA Championship, three Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular-season titles and three SEC Tournament Championships in four years.
He has won 77 percent of his games in his tenure at UK, making him one of the top college basketball coaches in America. He is a fan and player favorite alike. In an unscientific poll last November, Tubby was voted by opposing SEC players as the top conference coach they would most enjoy playing under.
Tickets for the August 10-12 "Belterra Casino Indy 300" weekend are still available. The Friday, Aug. 10, line-up features the "Jani-King Short Track Special," featuring the USAC WorldCom National Midget Car Series. Indy Racing League qualifying and "The 84 WHAS 150" NASCAR Gatorade All Pro race share the 1.5-mile tri-oval on Saturday Aug. 11, and Sunday, Aug. 12, begins with a Pre-Race Brunch beginning at 10:00 a.m. featuring and the music of Cincinnati-favorite "Blessid Union Of Souls" and an autograph session with the band.
